The arrival of April brings forth new produce as Spring time fruit and vegetables line the stalls of outdoor markets all over Italy.
When we follow the food calendar and buy seasonally, the local produce always tastes better when in season in Italy, it costs less and gives us the energy to over come the weather. Which could also be applied to eating seasonally in Calgary right now while the Winter snow refuses to go away. Furthermore buying local produce ensures we support the local economy.
What’s in season in Italy in April
Artichokes take the markets by storm and are delicious on antipasto platters, in soups, savoury pies and risottos. New on the scene is fresh asparagus, fava beans (not the easiest to peel but so worth it), eggplant, strawberries, mint, peas, potatoes, spinach, arugula, radishes, citrus and rhubarb which technically has been available since January but really flavourful now.
Still kicking around is celery, leeks, fennel, broccoli, carrots, chard and endive.
